Committees

At Good Shepherd, our committee chairs and members do countless hours of work each week from preparing for weekly worship to planning educational events to facilitating events. Please see the links below to learn about each of our committees and if you'd like, how you can become involved.

Education Committee

The Education Committee’s goal is to support the spiritual growth of all GSLC members. Many of the official duties of the committee involve educating the youth of the church from ages 3 through high school. However, adult congregation members can learn through their service of teaching kids on Sundays, working on holiday programs, helping out with vacation bible school and much more. In addition, we plan the church’s adult forum series, an educational series held during the Sunday School hour. Their committee’s programs include: Sunday School, Confirmation, High School, Adult Forum and Vacation Bible School.

If you are interested in helping with any of our education programs, please contact Susan Hinrichs.

Evangelism Committee

The goal of the Evangelism Committee is to create opportunities to meet and interact with potential new members of the congregation. One simple way we do this is getting our name out in the community through advertisements, word of mouth from our members, and our church website. Another way we do this is through our annual boot sale, a nativity walk/concert, and most recently our outdoor family movie night. These events are meant to be a non-threatening way for us to show the community that we are a fun, vibrant church.

The Boot Sale is an opportunity for church members to have a mini-garage sale out of the truck of their cars. It occurs in October in conjunction with the Apple Festival and the Fair Trade Fair. The Nativity Walk is a showcase of nativity sets from around the world which will be combined with a concert this coming December. Family Movie Night is like a drive-in movie in the church parking lot. With the help of a jumbo movie screen, we show a free and fun family movie for anyone who wants to attend.

If you would like to help out with any of the events or serve on the Evangelism Committee, please contact Linda Baker-Scaggs.

Fellowship Committee

The fellowship committee plans events for the fellowship of congregation members. In addition to the weekly donuts, we plan the ice cream social and the church picnic each year. We also plan and execute any special receptions for members and staff.

The ice cream social is part of a kick-off event for Sunday School. It is a way for all members to remember the importance of participating in both the education of our young members AND that we too need to be learning with and about God. The church picnic is a fun way for the congregation to come together and celebrate the beginning of summer. Both events often include a dunk tank and games for the kids plus lots of great food.

If you would like to serve on the fellowship committee or help serve on Sunday mornings, please contact John Hart.

Property Committee

The property committee handles all maintenance projects and large construction projects for the church. In the past they have worked on installing a new canopy, adding a security system, installing new carpet, spring and fall clean up days, keeping up the grounds of the church and many other small and large projects.

Ideas for property improvements are always welcome, as is your support/volunteer help to carry out these projects throughout the year. If you would like to help out or serve on the property committee, please contact Jim Hack.

Service Committee

The service committee is an active and vibrant group of people who serve both in our home community and throughout the world with monetary donations. Below is a list of some of the many projects the committee is involved in:

  • Fair Trade Fair (selling fair trade crafts for Lutheran World Relief)
  • Christmas Giving Tree (providing gifts for foster children who would not receive them otherwise & for the men’s safe house)
  • Backpack Drive (provided to Empty Tomb for children in need)
  • Special Offerings (for Lent, Thanksgiving, and more and given to area and international charities)
  • Soup for the Times Center

Above is just a sampling of the many great service projects we do at GSLC. To get involved, please contact Debby Rehn.

Stewardship Committee

The stewardship committee works to develop and maintain the resources of our church. We host the “time and talent” fair in the fall which encourages members to volunteer their time to the church by doing work such as serving on a committee or helping out at worship services. At Thanksgiving, we provide nearly 100 meals to families who would not have a holiday meal without our help. The committee gets items from the congregation, organizes and distributes them to families in our committee. The committee also does the job of holding an annual pledge drive for the church. We seek annual commitments from our members to keep the church vibrant, growing, and financially healthy.

If you have a talent for helping people realize their own gifts, or would like to serve on the stewardship committee in any way, please contact Gary O’Brien.

Worship & Music Committee

There are many things that happen behind the scenes of our worship services that are unknown to much of the congregation. The worship committee helps to prepare the church for all worship services, plan the services with the Pastor, Choir Director and Organist, and organize members who serve during the service. Each Sunday many people give their time to be ushers, lay readers, cantors, and communion servers, and to do many other tasks that make the worship services meaningful to the congregation as a whole. The committee is always looking for people to volunteer their time to help out during worship services.

If you would like to help out on Sundays or be a member of the worship & music committee, contact Sherrill Houchens.

Youth Committee

The youth committee is involved with many events and activities that help our youth grow to be engaged and excited about God and the Church. Our activities center around the following:

Fellowship

Events that encourage fellowship among the youth of our church such as monthly gatherings, ski trips, and Christmas caroling. We have events for our grade school children, middle schoolers and high schoolers plus some events for everyone.

Fundraising

The youth work throughout the year to raise money to go to retreats, conferences and service events. Some of our fundraisers have been an annual “Newlywed Game”, parent’s night out, and a chili lunch.

Service

The youth committee participates in the Crop Walk, preparing food for the Daily Bread Soup Kitchen and helping throughout the community in by participating the Canteen Run program.

Spiritual

Each year the youth have many opportunities to grow in their faith and learn to become future church leaders. In the past this has included confirmation camps, leadership labs and leading summer Thursday night worship services.

If you would like to help plan a youth event or be on the youth committee, contact Bob Olson.
